I was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. Both of my parents were artists, and therefore, I was introduced to the beautiful world of art at a very young age. Growing up I had no doubts that art was the career choice that I wanted to pursue. My grandfather, a poet and storyteller, also played a very influential role in allowing my imagination to fly. As I was constantly exposed to these dual visual and written influences, my interest in Illustration grew extensively. I began drawing and painting images illustrating my own poetry and stories.
At the age of nine I arrived in Southern California, where I currently live. Throughout my high school years I took a variety of figure drawing and design courses, subjects that continue to characterize my artwork today. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration with distinction from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
My main interests rest in the human psyche and relationships, even though I also find inspiration in a variety of events and people that I meet in my life. I become extremely fascinated when I start thinking about what makes people who they are, do what they do, or what makes them tick, one’s relationships with others, and objects. In my artwork I strive to achieve a balance between communicating my own specific views while keeping the interpretation of my work open to others.
I usually communicate my ideas through acrylic and ink, since I love the contradiction this combination offers; the acrylic provides a solid look, durability, and forgiveness – when a mistake is made – while ink has the property of delicateness and unforgiving nature. However, from time to time, I do enjoy experimenting with other materials too.
